Objects of Permanence
Objects of Permanence
Curator: Mellany Sanchez
Sept. 6-14, 2023
Objects of Permanence, a special installation curated by Mellány Sánchez and presented during New York Fashion Week, seeks to spotlight the rich histories of the Puerto Rican and other migrant community labor forces in New York City’s garment industry.
For this exhibition, I designed a distinctive installation titled "The Gym That Lifted Loisaida, 2023." This installation chronicles the legacy of my grandfather's gym, Gladiators Gym in Alphabet City, New York. Through a carefully crafted timeline, the installation guides visitors through the impact of the gym, focusing on its iconic membership T-shirt and its profound influence on the community. Worn predominantly by residents of the greater Lower East Side, this shirt symbolized unity, health, and well-being within the neighborhood.
VRS® was tasked with desiging the Exhibition T-shirt to be sold at the Abrons Art Center, printed by
LQQK Studio.
